8x6mm Oval Blue Tourmaline

We are progressing in our co-creative jewelry design project posted on our social media pages and mentioned in our last blog post. So far you have chosen an indicolite oval tourmaline stone, and voted to fashion it into a ring. The metal voting round is closing soon with white gold in the front. The final round will be the mounting and we will post images from which you will choose and those results will be posted as well. Then will come the finished product- a gorgeous tourmaline ring! How exciting to see its creation from start to finish! Good job and many thanks for your participation!

By the way, if you happen to see Summer please show her to Kennebunkport- we need the warmth! Til next time!
Breathe, Relax and take time for yourself!

Help us design a piece of jewelry!

Welcome Back! We have so much exciting news to share with you! First off, we would like to give you a gentle reminder that Mother’s Day is rapidly approaching- May 12th. Don’t forget to honor your mother- she is the magnificent being who gave you life! We have beautiful jewelry pieces to accommodate all budgets, so come in and allow us to help you select just the right piece for Mom. And, husbands you will be happy to know that we are offering 35% off on select diamond jewelry; pendants, rings or a smashing pair of earrings would certainly demonstrate your love and appreciation to the mother of your children. Thoughtfulness goes a long way, as you may already know!

If you read our last blog entry, you’ll remember we talked about the fun and joy that occurs during the process of creating a new piece of jewelry or perhaps redesigning an older piece to make it new again. We became inspired to engage you in the fun filled co-creative process of designing a great new piece of jewelry that we will proudly display and offer for sale in one of our Tourmaline cases. Here’s how it will work! A poll placed on our social media pages where you may vote on your choice of cut and color of Tourmaline. Next, you’ll vote for the color of gold you’d like to see housing the stone: white, yellow, or rose gold will be offered. Next you will enter your preference for what the piece will be… a pendant or a ring. We will then offer some choices for mountings, then Voila- a picture of the gorgeous finished piece will be featured on our Facebook and Instagram pages. All of the above choices will be decided according to the highest number of votes. Just reply to our post on Facebook or Instagram and we will tally up the votes and announce the selections each week. You will experience the excitement and anticipation as you witness a lovely piece of jewelry come to life while joining in the fun of jewelry design and creation!

Spring Cleaning here at Coastal Jewelers!

Spring has finally arrived in Kennebunkport! The temperatures are warmer, days are longer, and the sweet faces of pansies and daffodils are peeking out from the remnants of melting snow. Robins have been spotted hopping along on the bare brown ground, soon to be transformed into lush green grass! Everything is waking up and ushering in the energy of spring… renewal, regeneration, reorganization, cleaning up and cleaning out. Do you remember coming home from school, as a kid, to bare windows? Curtains taken down to be washed, dried and ironed, while Windex was used to erase winter’s fingerprints on the glass panes. The scent of furniture polish permeated every room in the house as a massive Spring-cleaning process was well underway! How my mother loved her Spring-cleaning ritual- making everything clean and fresh. And so, it continues here at Coastal Jewelers, the exact same familiar scents of Windex and furniture polish are in the air as the windows are washed and our jewelry cases polished, reorganized and rearranged to make room for the new. We’ve expanded our estate jewelry section and rearranges displays in our tourmaline collection. We have been busy creating new designs for rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets in preparation for the busy summer season.
So, has the energy of Spring moved you to look around and decide to renew and refresh? One commonly overlooked aspect of our home is the jewelry box. When was the last time you sorted through it all? Consider taking some quiet time for yourself to spend with your jewelry pieces collected over the years. As you hold each piece, enjoy the pleasant memories flooding in, bringing a smile to your face! Those great earrings purchased on a wonderful vacation, the surprise diamond necklace given to you as a birthday present, or perhaps a brooch or two handed down to you from your Mom or grandmother. You get to re-experience these wonderful times represented by these pieces of jewelry.
But, as you near the bottom of the box housing your treasures, you see a few pieces that have been long forgotten; pieces that perhaps have fallen out of favor with your current style. You decide to put them in a separate pile as you finish your task at hand and wonder what to do with these left over least favorite pieces. May we suggest packing up this jewelry and consider bringing them in to the store to chat with us about using the stones to redesign a piece or pieces that you will once again enjoy wearing! Or we could talk about designing pieces for you to hand down to a loved one. We do quite a lot of custom work and re-designing and re-purposing jewelry is one of our many services offered. We so enjoy co-creating with you to bring to life exquisite pieces of jewelry you’ll be excited to wear again. We guarantee fun during the creative process and delight with the finished product!
We are currently open 10:00am to 5:00pm, seven days a week and look forward to seeing of hearing from you soon!
Happy Spring!

HAPPY SPRING!

It sure seemed like a long winter but Mother Nature didn’t cover us with nearly as much white stuff as we are used to in our beautiful State of Maine! Hopefully she won’t pull any tricks on us and lay down one more layer of snow just for fun!
Even though the streets of Kennebunkport aren’t as busy in the winter months we sure do keep busy here in the store doing inventory, designing new pieces and attending trade shows and educational seminars to make sure you continue to receive the finest quality jewelry with the best customer service and knowledge behind it!  In January,  Susan & Brian attended the RJO show in Nashville (fun City!) and in March,  Susan & Abbie attended the SJTA show in Atlanta and between the two shows we came back with 50+ new pieces for the ever growing estate collection and a lot of other great new items for the store.  Some of the new pieces featured this year are gorgeous vintage filigree diamond rings, unique moonstone and onyx rings, interesting cameo pieces and stunning opal rings mixed with diamonds and enamel. Estate jewelry can be so fun to look at and imagine the history behind it! We are also excited to announce that starting in early May we will be carrying the Thorsten wedding band line. These bands are all alternative metals in some really cool designs ranging from volcanic ash, wood inlay and dinosaur bone or for the purist, they also have the simplicity of titanium and other metals in a smooth or hammered finish. There are designs to fit everyone’s taste and you can’t beat the affordable price points.  Come check them out!
Every day promises to get a little warmer and soon the flowers will start poking their lovely heads through the soil. We are now currently open every day except Wednesday and starting April 1st we are open 7 days a week! Hope to see you soon!

What is tourmaline? How does Tourmaline Heal the Body?

What is Tourmaline?

Tourmaline is a gemstone that belongs to a complex family of borosilicate mixed with iron, magnesium or other various metals that depending upon the proportions of its components may form as red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue or violet.

The name Tourmaline comes from an ancient Sinhalese word “turmali” meaning “a mixed color precious stone” or “something small from the earth.”

How does Tourmaline Heal the Body?

Far infrared rays are invisible rays of energy. They are able to penetrate all layers of the human body, and reach the inner most regions of tissues, muscles and bone- down to the cellular level. Through this, for infrared rays and negative ions are also incredibly important in determining and regulating mood. Research has shown that mood disorders may be improved first as well through negative ion generations as antidepressants- but without the negative side effects. Why? Because these ions promote oxygenation to the brain and regeneration of the blood Tourmaline emits for infrared radiation in the 4-14 micron wavelength- which boosts the immune system and detoxifies the body. Tourmaline is a powerful ally to your body’s health and well-being.

Summer is Almost Upon Us

We are thrilled to be enjoying the sunshine, blooming flowers, late sunsets and more traffic. Our latest blog below features the intriguing and lengthy history of Maine famous tourmaline mine; Mount Mica as well as “What’s Going On” in our neck of the wood!

The History of Mount Mica
The Mt. Mica mine, which has just re-opened to the public, is located about 6km. northeast of the small town in Oxford Country by the name of South Paris. The mine is situated on a small hill, at an elevation of 970 feet in forested terrain. Mt. Mica was the first source of Tourmaline in the United States and would become the first gem mine in America as well.
In 1868 Elyjah Hamlin and his son Augustus began a serious mining venture at Mt. Mica. During their mining endeavor, many beautiful gem quality tourmaline were found. Tiffany & Co. of New York was a frequent customer for the Maine Tourmaline and sold them through their Manhattan Store. J.P. Morgan was also a frequent customer and purchased numerous crystals and made several donations to various museums such as The American Museum of Natural History. A selection of some of the finest of these Maine Tourmalines found their way into the Hamlin Necklace.
In 1890 Mt. Mica was leased by Loren Merrill and the next 23 years saw many fabulous Maine Tourmaline discoveries. One such fabulous crystal was faceted into 69.25ct blue green tourmaline and sold to Tiffany & Co. for $100,000.
In 1926 Mt. Mica was sold to Howard Irish of Buckfield, Maine. He didn’t enjoy the success that Merrill before him had but he did find several thousand carats of gorgeous green tourmaline.
In 1965 Frank Perham leased Mt. Mica. Because he had more knowledge and experience Perham had considerably more luck finding significant Maine Tourmaline. A stunning 59.59ct heart shape gem came from his finds. It was of the Indicolite variety which is blue green in color.
Plumbago Mining Corp. of Rumford, Maine purchased Mt. Mica in 1973 and commenced mining shortly thereafter. They discovered a new pocket of Maine Tourmaline only the size of a grapefruit but yielding a mammoth crystal which would be cut into a flawless emerald cut gemstone weighing 256 carats, which was a national record for the size of Tourmaline.
In August 2003 Coromoto Minerals LLC purchased Mt. Mica and began mining; removing some of the western most portion of the mine. This opened several new pockets of beautiful quartz and apatite crystals. Only in 2004 was Maine Tourmaline found in many different pockets of the mine. Diverse colors were found some never discovered before such as electric pink and bright bluish green.
In 2005, Coromoto began mining in a new direction and in only a few dozen yards found the largest Maine Tourmaline pocket ever encountered at Mt. Mica.

What’s Going On

Can you believe it!
Conner MacDonald the eldest son of Susan and Brian MacDonald just graduated from Cheverus High School. In the fall he will be entering his freshman year at Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire. The staff at Coastal Jewelers sends him Congratulations and best wishes.

A sad day in Kennebunkport
There is a palpable void in Kennebunkport with the loss of our dear First Lady Barbara Bush. She was a lovely women and frequent customer here at Coastal Jewelers. We had the pleasure of helping her cherished husband pick out a strand of her famous pearls; and were honored to work with her from then on. President Bush Sr. came home to Kennebunkport at the end of May and was sadly missed at the annual Memorial Day Parade as he has been recently hospitalized. We wish him a speedy recovery!
